The Making of Interface Object Touchpads for Akina

Aaron had a brilliant idea to mimic the touch event of a finger that calls the iPhone or iPad into action by simulating fingertips with salty sponges wrapped in a latex glove. Since the iPhone is able to handle multiple touch events, having an object built around different sets of “fingers” allows you to interact with the iPad in a more physical way. We had made the iPad app Akina with this in mind; to have flowers and vines spring up from the path of these moving plant creatures. After I got the base from Aaron went through many paper iterations:

But ultimately wanted to invoke a bit more of the artistic aesthetic that I made in the application:

So I used the silhouette style of the plants in the app and cut them out of medium weight paper:

Then made a circular base for all the creatures and folded the paper around the base:

I was so happy to see how they came out- the different types of plants we used were captured well in the papercraft and it did not add too much weight to the objects as a whole. We’ll do some followup posts with these little guys in action soon!
